Saskatchewan Roughriders Dinner With Doubles Event

On September 1, 2024, an event titled «Dinner with Doubles» took place at the Casino Regina Show Lounge, bringing together seven former Saskatchewan Roughriders teammates. The gathering featured Darian Durant, Wes Cates, Chris Getzlaf, Neal Hughes, Mike McCullough, Luc Mullinder, and Scott Schultz, who engaged in heartfelt conversations and humor, celebrating their shared history.

The event commenced with an exquisite prime rib buffet, followed by a roundtable discussion that reflected on a transformative period in Roughriders history. Durant, who had a significant 11-season career with the team starting in 2006, expressed gratitude towards his former teammates, emphasizing their support and belief in him well before he became a prominent player.

During the evening, emotional tributes were paid to Jim Hopson and Ken Miller. The proceeds from the event are designated for the Saskatchewan Roughrider Foundation in memory of Hopson, who passed away at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer. Durant recounted Hopson’s impact on his career and the Roughriders franchise.

Moreover, Coach Ken Miller, who passed away on August 21, was fondly remembered by Durant and McCullough, who reflected on Miller’s mentorship and fatherly approach, which inspired the team during his coaching tenure.

The gathering highlighted the successful period from 2007 to 2013, during which the Roughriders made significant playoff appearances, including two Grey Cup victories. Durant notably remembered the iconic moment in 2013 when they claimed victory at home.

The evening was filled with anecdotes and humor, with McCullough sharing a comedic story about his unexpected inclusion in celebratory photographs, alongside playful banter that emphasized the long-standing camaraderie among teammates.

Schultz reminisced about Durant’s practice performances and how their early experiences forged lasting connections, while Hughes added his memories of their practice squad days, showcasing the lighthearted spirit that prevailed throughout the event.

Ultimately, «Dinner with Doubles» served as a heartfelt tribute to a group that has significantly impacted the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ legacy, reinforcing their bonds and celebrating unforgettable moments within the team’s history.
