Disney’s First R-Rated Marvel Film ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Praised by Ryan Reynolds
Deadpool & Wolverine star Ryan Reynolds is praising Disney as the “hard R” film gets a new F-bomb-laced promo spot and new poster.
The eccentric superhero movie—which is slated for a July 26 theatrical release—marks Disney’s first R-rated film in their expansive Marvel Cinematic Universe saga.
Reynolds’ first two Deadpool films were produced by 20th Century Fox, but the future of his R-rated saga about the crimson-clad mutant seemed to be up in the air after Disney acquired the legendary studio. Since the merger, Fox has been renamed 20th Century Studios.
Any worries from fans about how the PG-13 MCU was going to integrate the R-rated sensibilities of Deadpool—as well as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, who got an R-rated movie with Logan at Fox—were left in the dust with the release in late April of the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine.
The official trailer contains five F-bombs in total along with lots of merry mayhem from the Merc with a Mouth and his adamantium-clawed counterpart.
In a video interview with Fandango posted Monday, Reynolds admitted how pleasantly surprised he was over Disney letting him get away with as R-rated madness as he did in Deadpool and Wolverine.
“I hope it doesn’t sound condescending, I’m really proud of them for doing this. I think it’s a huge step for them,” Reynolds told Fandango. “I mean, it adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company and the different people that they have been entertaining forever.”
If Disney didn’t let them go the whole nine yards with his latest Deadpool adventure, Reynolds said the film simply would be the same.
“I was surprised though, that they let us go as hard R, but very grateful,” Reynolds explained to Fandango. “I mean there’s no other way to do it.”
To kick off the pre-sale of tickets to Deadpool & Wolverine, two promo spots were released Monday—one that mostly features footage from the film and another keys in on Ryan Reynolds along with the film’s new poster.
The footage-filled promotional spot continues Deadpool’s R-rated tradition and squeezes three F-bombs into the clip’s one-minute runtime, along with a sexually suggestive scene to wrap it up.
The other promotional clip shows Jackman and Reynolds at a catering table on a film set, where Jackman hands his co-star an envelope with tickets to the film. The spot is interspersed with clips from the film.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s official trailer introduces some new characters to the Deadpool movie saga, including a Time Variance Authority agent named Paradox (Succession star Matthew Macfayden) and Cassandra Nova—the main villain in the film—played by The Crown star Emma Corwin.
Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine debuts in theaters July 26.
