On August 16, 2024, doctors across India took to the streets to protest the tragic rape and murder of a young trainee doctor in Kolkata. The event has sparked a nationwide outcry, with many calling for justice for the victim.

West Bengal‘s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a rally demanding the death penalty for the perpetrators at the R.G. Kar Medical College, where the incident occurred. Her actions have ignited major demonstrations in medical colleges all over West Bengal.

The Calcutta High Court has raised concerns about the police’s failure to provide adequate protection, especially considering the large crowd that gathered on the night of the incident. “If 7000 people are to gather, it’s hard to believe the State police did not know,” the court stated.

As of now, police have arrested 25 individuals in connection with the riots that erupted following the tragic news, and they are in custody until August 22.

Violence also struck the hospital where the victim was found dead, as emergency wards and other facilities were vandalized by angry demonstrators. This unrest was a direct reaction to the shocking details surrounding the murder.

The family of the victim has informed the CBI that they suspect a few interns and staff at the hospital might be involved in the crime. They provided names to the central agency to assist in the investigation.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), representing around 400,000 members, has called for a nationwide strike. The 24-hour shutdown will impact most hospital services, except for those deemed essential. This comes as people express their deep frustration and sorrow over the loss of the young doctor.

Protests have spread to various cities, including Mumbai and Hyderabad, with many waving signs and chanting for justice. Demonstrators argue that doctors, especially women, are particularly vulnerable while performing their duties.

The aftermath of the tragedy highlights a significant issue: safety for medical personnel in hospitals and medical facilities is inadequate. Authorities are being called upon to address this critical matter immediately.

This incident is tragically not isolated. In India, there were over 31,000 reported rapes in 2022 alone. Even with changes in laws following past incidents, many feel that the systems in place do not offer enough safety or support.
