DTE Energy Invests $100 Million in Metro Detroit Electric Grid Expansion
DTE Energy has announced a significant investment in the construction of three new electric substations in the metro Detroit area, allocating $100 million for this development over the next three years. The substations are to be located in Northville Township, Pontiac, and Shelby Township. These facilities are integral to adjusting voltage levels from power plants to ensure the safe and efficient distribution of electricity.
Matt Paul, DTE‘s President and COO, emphasized the long-term benefits of the investment, stating, «We’re not just building for today — we’re building the grid of the future to meet the evolving needs of our customers and communities for decades to come.» Each new substation is planned to be constructed between 2024 and 2026.
The Northville Township substation, with a projected cost of $57 million, is expected to support the technology corridor in Northville Township and Plymouth. Meanwhile, the Pontiac substation, valued at $17 million, aims to improve reliability and increase capacity on the southwest side of Pontiac. The Shelby Township substation will cost $39 million and focus on meeting industrial and commercial demand along 23 Mile and 24 Mile roads.
Incorporating smart grid technology, the substations are designed to enhance power supply flexibility and reliability, potentially reducing both the frequency and duration of power outages. The infrastructure project also includes the installation of new poles, power lines, and electrical equipment to enhance service delivery.
Mark Abbo, Supervisor of Northville Township, reacted positively to the announcement, describing the investment as «rather dramatic» and «very impactful.» He noted the essential role of infrastructure in supporting development, creating jobs, and diversifying the tax base in Northville Township.
Moreover, Renee Tomina, Senior Vice President at DTE, highlighted the company’s focus on improving reliability and preparing for increased electrification demands. Tomina remarked, «At DTE we are really focused on continuing to improve reliability for our customers and also to ensure that we’re ready for the electrification of the future that’s coming at us.»
Additionally, DTE’s investment includes rebuilding both overhead and underground infrastructure associated with the new substations, further enhancing the reliability of service provision to local businesses and residences.
