Dylan Cease Throws Second No-Hitter in Padres History
In an exhilarating game held in Washington, D.C., Dylan Cease made headlines by pitching the second no-hitter in San Diego Padres history. With a final score of 3-0 against the Washington Nationals, Cease’s performance capped off a three-game sweep.
Cease, who had narrowly missed throwing a no-hitter two years ago, retired the last three batters with remarkable efficiency. After getting Ildemaro Vargas and Jacob Young to ground out, he secured the final out by forcing CJ Abrams to fly out to right field on a slider.
Not only did Cease’s effort mark his career achievement, but it also showcased his skills as he struck out nine batters and walked three. This was the 28-year-old right-hander’s third complete game in his 145 games as a major league player, and he threw a career-high 114 pitches, overcoming even a 1-hour, 16-minute rain delay in the first inning.
While this was not Cease’s first complete game, his previous outings also exemplified his potential, including a seven-inning three-hitter against Detroit and another impressive outing against Minnesota.
The Nationals came dangerously close to breaking Cease’s no-hitter in the fifth inning, only for a ball to pop out of second baseman Xander Bogaerts’ glove, which was salvaged by center fielder Jackson Merrill. Despite some tense moments, Cease maintained his composure throughout the game.
In total, Cease faced only three baserunners, including a couple of walks and a caught stealing in the first inning. As the season progresses, fans and analysts alike are excited to see where Cease’s career will take him next.
The Padres’ victory not only signifies an impressive win but also a significant moment in the franchise’s history, as they achieved their first series sweep of the season. San Diego is gearing up for their next matchup against Baltimore, while the Nationals prepare to face St. Louis.
