Dyson Heppell Announces Retirement from AFL
Essendon star Dyson Heppell has decided to retire from AFL after an impressive 14-year career. The 32-year-old recently celebrated his 250th game and is set to hang up his boots at the end of this season.
Heppell, a beloved figure in the footy community, reflected on his journey and expressed pride in his contributions to the game. He mentioned that he wanted to retire while still playing well and noted that he felt it was time for the younger players to step up.
He was originally selected by Essendon as the eighth pick in the 2010 draft and quickly made a name for himself, becoming the first winner of the AFL Rising Star award for the club. Throughout his career, he collected numerous accolades, including an All-Australian title and Essendon’s Crichton Medal.

Even off the field, Heppell made an impact, forming a close friendship with Scleroderma patient Harrison Pennicott and demonstrating a caring nature towards children facing serious health battles.
In a heartfelt message to his teammates and fans, Heppell expressed gratitude for the friendships he has built and excitement for the team’s potential in the future. He indicated that he would love to see the club achieve success moving forward, saying, ‘Let’s tear in for whatever is left for us this year.’
