Maharashtra Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024

The process of counting votes for the Maharashtra and Jharkhand assembly elections has commenced, alongside bypolls in several other Indian states. Initial trends suggest an edge for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in both states, as per early results.

In Maharashtra, many exit polls have indicated a likely victory for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance. However, three exit polls have hinted that neither Mahayuti nor the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will manage to secure a clear majority, which might lead to political maneuvering to form a government.

The Mahayuti coalition comprises the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which contested in 149 seats, Shiv Sena with 81 seats, and the Ajit Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), which contested in 59 seats. In contrast, the Maha Vikas Aghadi includes the Congress, which contested 101 seats, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) with 95 seats, and NCP (Sharad Pawar) with 86 seats.

This election marks the first since divisions emerged within the NCP and Shiv Sena. Political dynamics have shifted considerably since the 2019 assembly elections, influencing the strategies and expectations of various factions and their leaders, including Uddhav Thackeray and Eknath Shinde, who are vying to uphold their respective political legacies and influence.

In Jharkhand, the elections were conducted in two phases, on November 13 and 20. The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress alliance faced the BJP-led NDA keen on capitalizing on issues like corruption and governance to secure victory. The voter turnout in Jharkhand was notably high at 67.74%, indicating robust public engagement.

Significant candidates in the Jharkhand elections include sitting Chief Minister Hemant Soren and BJP’s Babulal Marandi. The results are poised to have substantial impacts on the political trajectory of key leaders and their parties.

Across India, several by-elections were also held, including in locales such as Wayanad in Kerala, where Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contested, and assembly seats in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh. The outcomes of these polls are expected to influence ongoing political narratives and alliances.

Prominent political figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, actively campaigned in both Maharashtra and Jharkhand, emphasizing their respective platforms and policy proposals to sway voters.

The final results of these elections and their influence on regional and national politics are anticipated with keen interest, as they will shape future political alignments and governance strategies in both states.
