Ecuador‘s national football federation has taken the decision to dismiss head coach Felix Sanchez following their Copa America quarterfinal defeat against Argentina on Thursday.
Sanchez, a Spanish coach, led Ecuador to the quarterfinals for the third time in four Copa America editions, but their journey came to an end after a penalty shootout loss to the defending champions.
The Football Federation of Ecuador (FEF) announced the departure of Sanchez, who previously guided Qatar to victory in the AFC Asian Cup in 2019.
The decision comes just over a year since Sanchez signed a four-year contract with Ecuador in March 2023.
After the quarterfinal loss, Sanchez expressed his disappointment but also emphasized the potential of the team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September.
In his post-match comments, Sanchez praised the young Ecuadorian players and hinted at building a stronger team for future competitions.
The FEF thanked Sanchez and his coaching staff for their efforts and wished them success in their future endeavors.
