Edmonton Elks Welcome New Owner
A new chapter has begun for the Edmonton Elks as they officially welcomed Larry Thompson as their new owner. This marks a significant change since the team has been community-owned since 1949.
Larry, who has been a devoted Elks fan since attending games at Clarke Stadium back in 1972, expressed his excitement about taking on this role. “It is truly an honour to have this opportunity to be part of this team,” he said. His passion for the team runs deep, and he is eager to bring back their winning spirit.
In his first media appearance at Commonwealth Stadium, Thompson promised fans that he would do everything possible to ensure the Elks become a top contender in the Canadian Football League (CFL). He emphasized the need for the team to win games and regain its strong presence in the league.
The transition to a private ownership model was not an easy decision. Rick LeLacheur, president and CEO of the Elks, mentioned, “To move away from 75 years of community ownership was not taken lightly.” However, he believes that under Thompson’s leadership, the team is entering a new era of potential and growth.
Thompson, who sold his construction business in 2023, brings significant experience and resources to the table. He stated, “My success in that community afforded me this opportunity today.” His background in business will likely benefit the team’s management as they look to improve their performance both on and off the field.
While discussing the team’s identity, Thompson mentioned that the future will focus more on the «Double E» branding, which resonates closely with the franchise’s heritage. CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie supported this direction, emphasizing that the Double E is an essential part of the Elks’ identity.
As the season progresses, the Elks hope to turn around their current standing, having reported a deficit in 2022 and struggling with a record of 2-7 this season. Fans are looking forward to seeing how Thompson’s ownership impacts the team’s future.
