Egypt and Botswana Set for AFCON Qualifying Clash
The Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying rounds approach a critical juncture as Egypt is set to host Botswana in Cairo at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium on Tuesday. The match is pivotal for both teams, as they aim to secure positions in the upcoming continental tournament.
Egypt, already assured a place in their home competition, comes into this fixture after a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde. Al Ahly forward, Ahmed Abdelkader, scored for Egypt, but Cape Verde’s Júlio Tavares equalized with a 63rd-minute penalty, ending Egypt’s perfect qualifying record. Despite this setback, the Pharaohs remain undefeated across their last seven matches in all competitions, boasting five wins and two draws.
Botswana faces a must-win scenario if they are to break their absence from Africa’s premier football showcase since 2012. They currently sit second in the group, three points ahead of third-placed Cape Verde. However, Botswana needs at least a draw against Egypt to maintain control over their qualification fate. Their last encounter against Mauritania ended in a 1-1 draw, highlighting the team’s struggle to secure a decisive victory.
The Egyptian squad will need to adjust following the injury of Zamalek midfielder Mohamed Shehata, who will miss the upcoming match. His teammate, Nabil Donga, is expected to step in. Taher Mohamed is anticipated to maintain his prominent role in the Pharaohs’ attack, contributing alongside Ahmed Abdelkader and Mustafa Mohamed.
Botswana, under coach Mogomotsi ‘Teenage’ Mpote, may opt for consistency in their lineup, fielding an unchanged squad to face Egypt. Central to their formation will be the defensive efforts of players like Kabelo Seakanyeng and Gilbert Baruti, who are tasked with supporting an aggressive offensive lineup led by the combination of Kekaetswe Moloi and Tumisang Orebonye.
Historical encounters between the two sides show that Botswana has struggled against Egypt, having not beaten them in their last four attempts. This match presents an opportunity for Botswana not only to secure their qualifying position but also to potentially end this unwelcome streak.
