Eleanor Harvey faced a tough challenge at the Olympics as she fought her way into the semi-finals of the individual foil event. Unfortunately, she was defeated by American fencer Lauren Scruggs with a score of 15-9 on Sunday.

As the match started, Harvey began slowly and fell behind 4-0. However, she managed to catch up, tying the match at 5-5 in the second round. Scruggs, spurred on by Harvey’s comeback, increased her aggression and took the lead again.

After trailing 11-5, Harvey switched her foil in hopes of shaking up the momentum of the match. This tactic paid off somewhat, as she narrowed the gap to 12-7 towards the end of the second round, but ultimately, Scruggs held strong and sealed the victory.

The other semi-final was an all-American affair, with Lee Kiefer defeating Italian fencer Alice Volpi 15-10. This sets up a match between Harvey and Volpi for the bronze medal.

Harvey has already made history by reaching the semi-finals, ensuring that she will have the best individual performance for Canada in Olympic fencing history. In the quarter-finals, she had an incredible comeback against Italian Martina Favaretto, overcoming a 4-10 deficit to win 15-14.

Notably, the 29-year-old fencer from Hamilton celebrated her achievements loudly in the Grand Palais, indicating her joy and excitement. This is Harvey’s third time competing in the Olympics, having previously placed 7th in Rio 2016 and 16th in Tokyo 2021.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Yunjia Zhang made headlines with her impressive debut at the Olympics. She surprised the 9th-ranked fencer in the world, Chen Qingyuan, winning 15-7. Originally from Shanghai, Zhang moved to Toronto four years ago and is coached by her father.

Though Zhang’s remarkable journey ended in the next round against Flora Pasztor, who beat her 15-5, she remained optimistic about her Olympic experience, expressing that being an Olympian was a dream come true.

Another Canadian, Jessica Guo, had a tough day as well, losing 15-11 in the round of 16 to Lauren Scruggs after advancing through the day with a win against Arantza Inostroza.

Furthermore, Nicholas Zhang, the youngest male athlete in the Canadian delegation, faced off against Venezuelan Grabiel Lugo in a first-round bout. Despite a valiant effort, he lost 15-11 but took away valuable lessons from the competition.

With Harvey, Guo, and Zhang set to compete in the team foil event soon, the Canadian squad is hopeful for more success in the coming matches.
