Edmonton Elks Vs Calgary Stampeders Labour Day Classic

The Edmonton Elks faced off against the Calgary Stampeders in the annual Labour Day Classic at McMahon Stadium on Monday. The match was crucial for both teams as they aimed to improve their standings in the West Division.

Entering the game, the Elks held a record of 3-8, placing them at the bottom of the division, while the Stampeders had a 4-6 record, positioning them slightly ahead. A victory for the Elks would not only equate their win totals with the Stampeders but also tighten their competition with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, B.C. Lions, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

The Elks came into the match riding a wave of momentum, having won three of their last four games. However, they had suffered a narrow loss to the Montreal Alouettes in their previous outing, failing to secure victories in closely contested matches throughout the season.

Quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson started the game and showcased his best performance of the season, completing 25 of 36 passes for a total of 486 yards and three touchdown passes. His impressive play was instrumental in leading the Elks to a final score of 35-20 over the Stampeders.

In addition to Bethel-Thompson’s performance, Tevin Jones emerged as a standout player for the Elks, catching two touchdown passes. Eugene Lewis also contributed with a touchdown reception. Though the Stampeders managed to score a touchdown through quarterback Jake Maier and a punt-return touchdown from Peyton Logan, they ultimately could not overcome the Elks’ lead.

Dean Faithfull contributed to the Elks’ success with a field goal and a single point. Following a tough season, the kicking change was necessary, as Faithfull replaced Boris Bede, who has struggled this season.

The Elks’ defensive strategies proved effective, with Loucheiz Purifoy intercepting two of Maier’s passes, helping to secure the victory. The game was significant not only for its implications in the standings but also as a display of resilience and determination from the Elks, who had previously faced challenges against their provincial rivals.
