Elon Musk Considers Buying MSNBC Amid Comcast’s Restructuring
Elon Musk, the renowned entrepreneur and billionaire, recently engaged in a public discussion regarding the potential purchase of MSNBC, as Comcast announced its plans to spin off several of its cable networks. This move by Comcast has sparked speculation about the future of MSNBC and its place in the media landscape.
Musk, who has become known for his playful and sometimes provocative memes on his social media platform ‘X‘, shared a humorous post featuring a meme with a priest and a woman, hinting at the idea of him buying MSNBC. «And lead us not into temptation …,» Musk captioned the image, which showed the text «Elon Musk trying not to buy» over the priest and an MSNBC logo representing the woman.
The idea was further amplified by Donald Trump Jr., who joined the discourse on X, suggesting that Musk should purchase MSNBC. «Hey @elonmusk, I have the funniest idea ever!!!» Trump Jr. posted, responding to rumors about Comcast putting MSNBC up for sale. This exchange gained traction on social media, eliciting various reactions, including from podcast host Joe Rogan, who joked about wanting a position at MSNBC if Musk were to acquire it.
Comcast, MSNBC’s parent company, has announced significant organizational changes, which include merging networks like MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, E!, and others into a new entity identified as SpinCo. This decision comes as these networks experience declining ratings, prompting Comcast to intensify its focus on other brands such as NBC and Bravo.
There are contrasting sentiments within MSNBC as personnel grapple with the uncertainty caused by these corporate decisions. «Everyone is in a panic because everything is up in the air,» an MSNBC source revealed to The Post, reflecting the internal atmosphere at the network.
Musk’s interest in media acquisitions is not entirely unprecedented. In 2022, he successfully acquired Twitter, now rebranded as X, after years of speculation and memes about buying it. As Musk continues to hint at potential business ventures, observers remain curious about his next possible steps.
Brian L. Roberts, chairman and CEO of Comcast, emphasized the strategic angle by stating, «When you look at our assets, talented management team and balance sheet strength, we are able to set these businesses up for future growth.» This restructure is intended to optimize Comcast’s focus and investments, although it raises questions about MSNBC’s long-term strategy and viability.
