Emma Mckeon Secures Spot At Third Olympics With New Records In Australian Trials

Australian swimmer Emma McKeon, hailed as the most successful Olympian in Australia with five gold medals, achieved a milestone by securing her spot at a third Olympics in Paris. Her victorious 100m butterfly swim at the Australian Trials, clocking 56.85, not only guaranteed her participation but also set the stage for potentially adding more medals to her illustrious career.

Turning 30 just before the Trials, McKeon, under the coaching of Michael Bohl, showcased her prowess with a strong first 50m split of 26.20 and managed to clinch the victory in the event. Despite her success, it was a heartbreaking miss for Queensland’s Alexandria Perkins from USC Spartans who narrowly fell short with a time of 57.33, just missing the qualifying mark of 57.17.

In another notable achievement, Victorian swimmer Sam Williamson etched his name in the history books by securing his spot as an Olympian with a remarkable 100m breaststroke swim. Coached by Craig Jackson, Williamson smashed the Australian All-Comers record in this event, previously held by British ace Adam Peaty. His time of 58.80 puts him in the ranks of the fastest Australian swimmers ever in this discipline.

Joining Williamson in the 100m breaststroke category is WA’s Joshua Yong from UWA West Coast. Under the guidance of coach Ben Higson, Yong secured his spot on the national team with a timing of 58.48, just creeping under the required standard of 59.49. This achievement further bolsters Australia’s depth in the medley relay events, setting the stage for a promising showing at the upcoming Olympic Games.
