End of an Era: Roadkill Series Not Renewed by Motor Trend
The beloved online automotive series, Roadkill, will not be returning for a new season in 2025, marking the conclusion of an impressive 12-year run. This news was confirmed by Mike Finnegan, one of the show’s hosts, who announced the decision in a social media post. «I just learned that it’s over,» Finnegan lamented. «After the end of Season 13, which we just finished filming a few weeks ago, there will be no new episodes of [Roadkill] filmed.»
Roadkill initially launched as a web series on YouTube in 2012, featuring hosts Mike Finnegan and David Freiburger, both former editors at Hot Rod Magazine. The series quickly gained a dedicated following thanks to its focus on building unique and creative vehicles and the relatability and chemistry between the hosts. Some of the show’s most memorable projects include the turbo Ford Mustang V-8-powered ‘Rotsun’ and the innovative ‘Vette Kart,’ a car built without body panels.
The series lived on YouTube until 2018 before transitioning to the streaming service Motor Trend on Demand, following Discovery Communications‘ acquisition of Motor Trend in 2017. Presently, Roadkill is available on the Discovery+ platform. The show’s disappearance from the production schedule in 2025 marks a significant change in the automotive entertainment sphere.
The termination of the series comes amid broader cuts at Motor Trend, with other car enthusiast shows such as Dirt Every Day, Hot Rod Garage, and Engine Masters also being axed in recent years. Finnegan expressed uncertainty over the precise reasons for the show’s discontinuation, highlighting the closure of the Motor Trend production company and the unclear ownership of the Roadkill intellectual property.
Despite the series’ end, both Finnegan and his co-host Freiburger are continuing their automotive ventures through personal YouTube channels, ensuring that their signature style of vehicular adventures will persist outside the confines of the Roadkill brand.
