England urged to start Kobiee Mainoo against Denmark in Euro 2024 clash
Former England midfielder Frank Lampard has advised the national team to consider starting Kobiee Mainoo for their upcoming Euro 2024 match against Denmark.
England, who secured a victory in their opening game against Serbia, will be looking to further solidify their place in the knockout stage with another win against Denmark.
In the last match, Trent Alexander-Arnold lined up in midfield alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, a formation that Lampard found intriguing.
Lampard expressed his admiration for 19-year-old midfielder Mainoo and highlighted how he has seamlessly transitioned into the Manchester United squad this season.
He emphasized the need for Mainoo to be given the opportunity to showcase his abilities during England’s ongoing campaign in the group stage, pointing out the young player’s composed demeanor.
When it comes to the midfield, Lampard raised questions about Alexander-Arnold’s role, particularly in the face of differing tactical demands in the central position.
Lampard also discussed the balance on the left side of the pitch, highlighting the impressive performances of Phil Foden in the Premier League and the desired integration of his skills into the England national team.
Noting the absence of Luke Shaw due to injury, Lampard suggested that Kieran Trippier, while competent, may not offer the same dynamic as Shaw.
Asked about his midfield preferences, Lampard suggested considering Mainoo as a potential starter, pointing to the young player’s exceptional vision and passing ability.
He praised Mainoo’s capacity to find key passes through tight spaces, drawing comparisons to Cesc Fabregas who excelled in similar situations.
Lampard concluded by affirming that while there is still room for Alexander-Arnold in the midfield due to his exceptional passing range, Mainoo’s calmness under pressure makes him a compelling candidate for the role.
