Enhanced Security and Festive Celebrations for Pittsburgh’s Light Up Night 2024
The annual Highmark Light Up Night, a fixture of Pittsburgh’s holiday celebrations, is set to illuminate the city this weekend with a range of activities. Scheduled for Saturday, November 23, downtown Pittsburgh will come alive with vibrant light shows, live music, and various festive events.
The event will be headlined by the alt-rock band The Fray, performing at the Xfinity Riverfront Stage. Known for hits like «How to Save a Life» and «Over My Head (Cable Car)», the band will offer a nostalgic experience for attendees. In addition to musical performances, the 63rd annual celebration will feature the lighting of Christmas trees, three stages with live entertainment, craft food vendors, shopping opportunities, and a grand fireworks display.
Pittsburgh Police have announced robust security measures to ensure the safety of attendees. Officer presence will be heightened with more than 100 officers, both uniformed and plain-clothed, patrolling throughout the event area. Officer John Doe of the Pittsburgh Police stated, «We’re committed to providing a safe environment for everyone to enjoy the festivities.» Additional support will be provided by canine teams and the mounted unit, alongside community groups, particularly those focusing on youth engagement.
As part of the celebration, there will be various light installations, including «The Three Sisters: Lighting of the Sister Bridges», inspired by Latin and Central American indigenous cultures, scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday. Other featured activities include Merry Karaoke and the «5 at 5» bridge party offering happy hour deals.
Public transportation adjustments will be in place, and certain downtown roads will be closed to accommodate the event and ensure safety. Major closures will begin Friday at noon and extend until early Sunday morning. Participants are encouraged to plan their routes in advance, with details available on the event’s website.
The community is also invited to enjoy other holiday events, such as the Peoples Gas Holiday Market in Market Square, open throughout the weekend. It provides a platform for artisans and vendors to showcase unique holiday gifts, adding to the cheerful atmosphere of the season.
For those interested in cultural experiences, the Phipps Conservatory in Oakland is offering its «Holiday Magic» Winter Flower Show, while the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will perform the iconic score of «Home Alone» at Heinz Hall.
