Erik ten Hag Optimistic About Jadon Sancho’s Future at Manchester United
In a recent update regarding his squad, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag expressed optimism about the potential revival of Jadon Sancho‘s career at the club, following a tumultuous season marked by disagreement between the two.
Sancho, who has not been seen in a Manchester United jersey since the previous August, made a comeback during a friendly match after a successful loan period at his former team, where he had a significant impact by helping them reach the UEFA Champions League final. His return came after he publicly criticized Ten Hag in an online post.
Speaking to the Dutch publication AD Sportwereld prior to a 2-0 friendly victory on Saturday, Ten Hag revealed details of a productive meeting he had with Sancho earlier this month. “We had a good discussion,” Ten Hag stated. “Everyone can make mistakes. If a player reflects correctly, you can move past that mistake. Our club needs talented individuals, and I firmly believe that Jadon Sancho falls into that category. I am hopeful that we can establish a strong rapport and that he will play a significant role in our objectives moving forward.»
Despite rampant speculation surrounding his position, Ten Hag decided to extend his contract this summer, reinforcing his commitment to Manchester United. He took over the managerial role at Old Trafford in 2022 from interim coach Ralf Rangnick, who had famously remarked that the club required “open-heart surgery” to regain its former stature.
Reflecting on Rangnick’s earlier comments, Ten Hag agreed, stating, “He was completely spot on. We’ve dedicated considerable effort over the last two years, and he articulated it accurately; it’s an extensive and intricate process. I was aware from the outset that this would be a difficult undertaking.”
In recent months, the operational structure around Ten Hag has seen significant changes, particularly with the entry of Sir Jim Ratcliffe as a minority owner. Describing the early phases of collaboration with Dan Ashworth, the new sporting director, Jason Wilcox, the technical director, and Christopher Vivell, the director of recruitment, Ten Hag remarked that the initial interactions have been “very promising.”
This summer, Manchester United has already executed player transfers, acquiring a new asset for an initial fee of €62 million (approximately $67.6 million) and bringing in another for over €40 million (around $43 million) from his previous team.
Furthermore, the club continues to keep an eye on potential defensive acquisitions, including players from Bayern Munich and Serie A’s notable figures, according to sources cited by ESPN. When asked directly about the prospects of signing Matthijs de Ligt, Ten Hag stated, “I won’t specifically comment on the chances of adding those two players to our squad. Whether or not De Ligt will join is still undetermined. I have a good relationship with Matthijs, and I must admit, I wanted to recruit him two years ago. However, at that time, he was already well on his way to Bayern Munich, and surprisingly enough, his name was not mentioned in my discussions.”
