Eswatini, the last African nation to maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, is treading a careful path as it explores new economic opportunities in Asia. Despite being a friend to Taiwan, the kingdom is also strengthening its ties with China, leading to a delicate balancing act.

In recent developments, Eswatini has focused on building relationships with South Korea, Singapore, and Bhutan. Government spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo emphasized that this is not a shift away from China, which accounted for over $109 million in imports for the country in 2022. He believes that diplomacy should adapt to the nation’s evolving interests.

According to Nxumalo, Eswatini’s foreign policy is about friendship and engagement. «We want to make our presence felt in various geopolitical areas,» he stated, highlighting that these connections could benefit Eswatini in various forms, including economic and political opportunities.

Despite China’s ongoing pressure to sever ties with Taiwan, Eswatini has managed to maintain a degree of independence. Speculations about China issuing threats have not led to any significant action against the country.

The economic situation in Eswatini is dire, with nearly 60% of its population living in poverty. The aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by civil unrest, has damaged numerous businesses. Mavela Sigwane, head of the Federation of Eswatini Business Community, expressed excitement over a new Korea agreement that promises substantial economic growth.

Sigwane remarked, “This Korea agreement will open many avenues for local businesses to tap into the available opportunities in Korea.» Eswatini’s King Mswati has welcomed South Korea’s commitment of over $20 billion for investments in Africa.

Political analyst Sibusiso Nhlabatsi views Eswatini’s outreach to Asian nations as a move to diversify its international partnerships beyond traditional Western allies. He noted that this tiny kingdom aims to become a versatile player in the Asian economic landscape, thereby asserting its independence from larger powers.

Overall, analysts believe these new alliances could pave the way for increased trade, investment opportunities, and technological advancements, helping Eswatini reduce its dependency on any single market.
