Evacuation Order Issued for Labrador City Due to Forest Fire Threat
Forestry officials have issued an evacuation order for the residents of Labrador City and nearby Wabush as a precaution against a threatening forest fire.
The Forestry Department has raised concerns over the significant fire activity observed today, indicating a potential danger of the wildfire advancing towards the Labrador West area within the next 24 to 48 hours.
Labrador City, a community of approximately 7,450 people, is urged to evacuate eastward to the town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, a journey that spans about six hours by road.
Municipal authorities, including Mayor Belinda Adams, have directed residents to swiftly gather essential belongings and leave the area following the evacuation order.
This evacuation marks the second instance in recent months where a Labrador community has been impacted by forest fires, with Churchill Falls residents being evacuated on June 19.
