Experts are warning of a potential summer covid wave in the UK as cases surge, attributed to both new variants and waning immunity from previous infections. Prof Mark Woolhouse from the University of Edinburgh expresses concerns over the rise in cases, comparing it to the patterns seen during the previous summer wave in 2021, coinciding with events like the Euros football tournament.

He highlights the evolving nature of different variants and the implications of partial waning immunity in driving these waves. Woolhouse emphasizes that the shift towards a more enduring exposure to Covid among the younger population may pave the way for decreased vulnerability in later years.

Prof Woolhouse also reflects on missed opportunities in the early stages of the pandemic, suggesting a need for a long-term approach to pandemic response. The UK’s surveillance system, according to him, lacks the intensity it once had, making it challenging to track wave patterns and variant severity accurately.

In light of recent rises, Prof Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia notes that Covid rates may be comparable to last year, with fewer hospitalizations and deaths overall. New variants, including FLiRT and variants like KP3, have emerged, indicating ongoing evolution.

The UK Health Security Agency is closely monitoring these variants but has not altered public health guidance. The agency stresses that Covid becoming pervasive in society shouldn’t elicit extreme alarm, with the virus eventually resembling a common cold.

While symptoms remain unchanged, guidance encourages infected individuals to isolate for five days post-diagnosis. Vaccination efforts have focused on booster programs, urging eligible individuals to get vaccinated against severe symptoms.

Dr Jamie Lopez Bernal, a consultant epidemiologist with UKHSA, emphasizes the importance of protecting vulnerable populations and the significant role vaccines play in preventing severe illness.
