Famous Amos Founder Wally Amos Passes Away
Wally Amos, the beloved founder of Famous Amos cookies, has passed away at the age of 88. His family shared the news, saying he died peacefully at home after battling dementia.
Amos, who was originally from Tallahassee, Florida, opened his first Famous Amos cookie shop in Hollywood, California in 1975. His cookies quickly became a staple in grocery stores, known for their charming beige packaging with blue lettering.
In a heartfelt statement, Amos’s children expressed their admiration for their father, calling him a great American success story and a source of pride for the Black community. They remembered the invaluable lessons he taught them about hard work and pursuing dreams.
According to Amos, the secret ingredient in his famous cookies was love. He believed that loving what you do makes the results even better.
Though Famous Amos cookies are now widely recognized worldwide, it all started as a small shop in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, after facing declining sales in the late 1980s, Amos had to sell his company, but he continued to bake in Hawaii.
Amos’s family, in honoring his memory, suggested donations to the Alzheimer's Association instead of flowers. They also encouraged everyone to enjoy a chocolate chip cookie in his honor.
