Fan Zhendong from the People's Republic of China has clinched the Olympic gold medal in men’s singles table tennis, defeating Sweden‘s Truls Moregard with a score of 4-1. This victory marks Fan’s first individual Olympic gold, making it a historic moment for him on Sunday, August 4, 2024.

Truls Moregard, who is ranked 26th in the world, stunned many by taking the first game 11-8 and briefly leading the match. His path to the finals included impressive upsets, like defeating world number one Wang Chuqin.
Fan acknowledged the challenge, admitting, “To have to face an opponent like [Moregard] in an Olympic final is something that was frankly quite scary.” However, following his early loss in the best-of-seven match format, Fan quickly turned the tables, claiming victory in the next four games in a row.
Reflecting on his comeback, Fan expressed his happiness, stating, “I believed in myself, and was able to adjust and find solutions today.”
Moregard, despite the defeat, was proud of his silver medal, noting that reaching the finals as a first-time Olympian felt almost impossible. He remarked, “He deserved the gold medal. No regrets from me.”
Earlier in the day, Félix Lebrun had secured the bronze medal in front of a thrilled home crowd in South Paris Arena, defeating Brazil‘s Hugo Calderano 4-0, marking a significant moment for French table tennis.
