TUCSON, Ariz. – The recent death of Arizona politician John McLean in a vehicular crash has left a profound impact on his community, sparking discussions about road safety in Tucson. McLean, who had recently contested the Arizona Senate District 17 seat, was involved in a fatal accident early Friday morning.

According to the Tucson Police Department, the collision occurred when a Ford Explorer, driven by 27-year-old Michael Creel, allegedly ran a stop sign on Ridgeside Drive and struck McLean’s vehicle, which was traveling east on Broadway Boulevard. Authorities pronounced McLean dead at the scene.

Ronald Limbaugh, a neighbor and supporter of McLean, lamented, «That’s unfortunate he was at the wrong place at the wrong time.» Similarly, Javier Rodarte, another resident, expressed sorrow, saying, «It’s unfortunate the tragic news

McLean, aged 68, was a third-generation Arizona native who had campaigned as a Democrat on issues such as abortion access, water conservation, and increasing teachers’ salaries. «That’s why I voted for him, yeah,» Limbaugh stated in support of McLean’s policies.

The crash site on the intersection of Broadway Boulevard and Ridgeside Drive has reportedly been accident-prone, with several incidents each year despite the presence of illuminated stop signs. Residents, including Rodarte, have expressed concerns, suggesting potential solutions such as the installation of speed bumps to curb future accidents.

Michael Creel, the accused driver, has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and aggravated DUI. He remains in custody at the Pima County Jail and did not appear in night court on Friday.
