Fathers’ Day Celebration at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens
Dozens of families gathered early to celebrate Fathers’ Day at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
Manuel Vargas expressed, ‘Every day is a day for fathers, but this one is extra special.’
Some dads were playing soccer while others cheered on their kids on the field.
César Tzul shared, ‘I thank God first, as He gives one wisdom. I grew up without a father my whole life, so we learn along the way. I thank God a lot.’
César emphasized that fathers should be more present in their children’s lives than ever before. ‘They should invest more time in their kids because many fathers think just having children is enough. Giving them money is not enough; you have to be there with them all the time.’
‘Last week, she graduated from Columbia University, and the other is studying at St. John. Thanks to God, they are good young men, and I am very proud of them,’ César added.
His daughter studied neuroscience and received a scholarship for her excellent grades. ‘And I believe that shows the dedication and effort they’ve put into me,’ she added.
The first Fathers’ Day celebrations in the United States date back to 1908 in West Virginia. After an explosion that claimed the lives of several miners, the daughter of one of the victims, Grace Golden Clayton, requested to honor all fathers.
However, it wasn’t until June 19, 1910, that thanks to the efforts of Sonora Smart Dodd, a woman from Washington, fathers started being celebrated annually, but only in some states.
Fathers’ Day has been observed as a national holiday for 52 years across the nation.
Guillermo Andrade noted that unlike Mother’s Day, fathers enjoy celebrating by sharing in sports activities like this. ‘We want to be on a soccer field as we have always been, accompanied by our wives, our children, and we enjoy it. It’s a way for us to have fun.’
His son expressed gratitude for having a father who always supports him and has taught him good values. ‘Yes, my dad has always supported me in everything, and I appreciate that, and I want to replicate everything he has given me,’ said proud son Guillermo Andrade Jr.
According to some fathers, the celebration continues after the game with a BBQ at their homes.
