FDA Recalls Carrots Due to E. coli Outbreak
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has initiated an investigation into whole and baby carrots potentially contaminated with Shiga Toxin-producing E. coli bacteria. This action was taken after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked these products to a deadly outbreak of E. coli infections, resulting in the recall of several carrot brands on November 16 by Grimmway Farms.
The affected carrots were distributed nationwide across major retailers such as Aldi, Kroger, Publix, Target, Trader Joe’s, Walmart, Wegmans, and Whole Foods. To date, the outbreak has led to 39 reported illnesses, including 15 hospitalizations and one fatality, the latter occurring in Los Angeles County.
The FDA released a list of impacted brands of organic whole and baby carrots, which includes 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O Organics, President’s Choice, Simple Truth, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry. The carrots, sold from August 14 to October 23, include various types such as whole, cut, and peeled organic baby carrots.
Consumers are urged to check their homes for these products, especially those marked with «Best If Used By» dates ranging from September 11 to November 12. If found, they should dispose of them immediately and sanitize any surfaces the carrots may have contacted. The FDA provides a complete list and images of the recalled products for consumer reference.
This recall affects retail distribution centers across the United States, Puerto Rico, and Canada, with confirmed cases in 18 states so far, including California, New York, and Texas. The carrots are no longer expected to be on store shelves, but they may still be present in consumer homes.
Dr. Leonardo Rodriguez, an emergency medicine physician at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, highlighted the risk of E. coli infections, noting, «Anyone immunocompromised…these are your at-risk populations for this type of bacteria and having an unfortunate outcome like that.» Common symptoms of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infections include stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, and potentially severe dehydration. The CDC advises those with symptoms to seek medical advice, particularly if symptoms do not improve.
