Félix Auger-Aliassime Finally Beats Daniil Medvedev at Olympics
In an exciting match at the Summer Olympics taking place in Paris, Félix Auger-Aliassime from Canada managed to defeat Daniil Medvedev, who was previously unbeaten against him in their seven prior meetings.
The match took place on the red clay of Roland-Garros, and Auger-Aliassime played an impressive game, winning with a score of 6-3, 7-6(5). This victory marked a significant achievement for him as he overcame the challenge posed by the former US Open champion for the first time.
Auger-Aliassime showcased his skills beautifully, winning an impressive 88% of his first serve points and never facing a break point throughout the match. He maintained control from the start, leveraging his powerful groundstrokes to create 26 winners, compared to Medvedev’s 10. The errors were close too, with Auger-Aliassime committing 18 unforced errors against Medvedev’s 17.
Initially, both players held their serves well in the first set. Auger-Aliassime had a chance to break Medvedev’s serve early on but couldn’t convert. When rain interrupted the match, he took advantage of the pause and returned to take control of the set.
After the rain delay, Auger-Aliassime pushed through, taking a 5-3 lead after breaking Medvedev’s serve. He successfully served out the set, giving him his first set win against Medvedev in over a year.
In the second set, things heated up as Auger-Aliassime had multiple opportunities to break Medvedev. Despite not converting those chances, he consistently held his serve, keeping the pressure alive.
The match went into a high-stakes tiebreak, where Auger-Aliassime found himself in a tight spot after a double fault. However, he quickly turned the tide with a powerful forehand shot. A crucial mistake by Medvedev allowed Auger-Aliassime to serve for the match, which he clinched with a superb serve.
With this win, Auger-Aliassime is now just one victory away from competing for an Olympic medal. He will face either Casper Ruud, a past Roland-Garros finalist, or the Umag champion Francisco Cerundolo next in the tournament.
As Canada looks toward the medal standings in Paris, Auger-Aliassime embodies their best hope, especially now as he is also competing in the mixed doubles alongside Gabriela Dabrowski.
Despite this success, Dabrowski faced disappointment in the women’s doubles, as she and her partner were upset by opponents Mirra Andreeva and Diana Shnaider earlier in the day.
