Severe thunderstorm watches were issued across southern and central Quebec on Sunday, posing a threat to numerous outdoor events planned for the Saint-Jean celebrations.
One of the affected events is the grand spectacle for the national holiday scheduled on the plains of Abraham, where the opening act by Zébulon was canceled due to ‘heavy rain.’
‘This decision was made to ensure the safety of everyone, including the artists, spectators, and production team,’ the organizers announced in the early afternoon.
They confirm that the rest of the show will proceed as scheduled at 9 p.m.
‘Umbrellas will be allowed on the site. Put on your raincoat and your pride, and come in large numbers; it will be a memorable evening,’ they added.
The public is encouraged to stay updated on the situation on the event’s official website.
In L’Assomption, Michel Rivard’s evening performance was also canceled due to the risk of a storm.
Between 50 and 70 millimeters of rain are expected by Monday in most Quebec regions, according to Environnement Canada.
‘Torrential rains can cause flash floods and water accumulation on roads,’ warns the meteorological agency.
Unfortunately, the precipitation is forecasted to continue into Monday, although it is expected to ease by the afternoon.
‘The uncertainty lies in when it will end. It is not hopeless that the late afternoon will be drier,’ stated Catherine Brabant, a meteorologist at Environnement Canada.
La Ronde has already announced the closure of its amusement park on Sunday due to the inclement weather conditions. It is set to reopen for the national holiday on Monday.
Customers who purchased advance tickets can reuse them any day during the summer season, as indicated by the management in a Facebook post.
