Finidi George Resigns as Super Eagles Head Coach Amidst Arrival of Foreign Technical Adviser
Former Nigerian football star, Finidi George, has stepped down from his role as the head coach of the Super Eagles following the Nigeria Football Federation‘s decision to bring in a foreign technical adviser.
The move to appoint a foreign technical adviser came after a series of disappointing performances by the Super Eagles, including a crucial defeat that left the team struggling in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Finidi George, who took on the role as head coach earlier this year, had signed a one-year contract with the NFF, with the possibility of extension based on the team’s performance in major tournaments such as the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers.
During his tenure, Finidi led Nigeria in two international friendlies and also served as an assistant coach under the previous head coach, Jose Peseiro.
The decision to bring in a foreign technical adviser was seen as a strategic move by the NFF to revitalize the national team’s prospects and improve their performance on the international stage.
While an official announcement is yet to be made by the NFF through its website and social media channels, sources close to the situation have confirmed Finidi George’s resignation.
Ex-Super Eagles media officer, Toyin Ibitoye, confirmed the news in a social media post, stating that Finidi George has resigned from his position as the manager of the Super Eagles.
Additionally, sports photojournalist #poojamedia shared on social media that Finidi George resigned after apparently being subtly demoted with the arrival of the foreign technical adviser.
Finidi George, a former professional footballer born in Nigeria in 1971, is well-known for his successful spell at Ajax Amsterdam where he secured the UEFA Champions League title in 1995.
As a skillful winger, Finidi also made significant contributions to the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, during the 1990s, participating in multiple FIFA World Cups and clinching the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 1994.
After retiring from professional football in 2004, Finidi has remained active in the sport, taking up roles in coaching and sports administration.
