First Snowfall of the Season Hits South-Central Pennsylvania
South-Central Pennsylvania experienced its first snowfall of the season on Friday, marking a significant change in the weather for the region. According to WGAL News 8 Storm Team, Friday was designated as an Impact Day, a warning that weather conditions could potentially disrupt daily life.
Kalyn Norwood, a meteorologist reporting on the event, noted that a powerful storm system was moving across the area. «It was a fantastic Friday for some of you, especially if you loved the snow,» Norwood stated during the broadcast. However, she added that the storm was expected to shift northeast and depart from the region within hours. «Higher elevations still dealing with a little bit of wintry mix here,» she said, indicating the transition to rain in the lower elevations.
Reports from various counties, including Mifflin, Juniata, and Perry, described light snow mixed with rain, especially in higher altitudes such as ridge tops. In Franklin and Adams counties, the precipitation included a mix of rain and snow, with more prominent snowy conditions in areas like Chambersburg and Shippensburg.
A particularly scenic snowfall was reported in York County, where a photograph taken on Grant-Lee Road received attention for its picturesque quality, referred to by reporters as «Instagram snow» due to its visual appeal. «It was just enough to give you the picture,» Norwood described.
The storm was forecasted to diminish as the evening progressed, with a full transition from snow to rain anticipated by late Friday night. By midnight, meteorologists predicted the weather system would move out completely, bringing drier conditions for Saturday.
Further weather predictions suggested that despite initial cloud cover, Saturday was expected to be mostly dry, with the possibility of isolated rain showers. High pressure building on Sunday was expected to bring improved weather conditions, making it an ideal day for outdoor activities.
In the broader region, parts of Pennsylvania, including the Pocono Mountains, reported receiving up to six inches of snow. Other states in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic were also impacted by winter weather, with some regions experiencing freezing temperatures and torrential downpours.
