Former AFL Player Cam McCarthy Passes Away at 29
Former Australian Football League player Cam McCarthy, known for his time at Fremantle and the GWS Giants, has tragically passed away at the age of 29 in Perth.
On Thursday night, emergency services responded to a call in Lake Coogee, where McCarthy was discovered deceased. The WA Police have stated that his death is being treated as non-suspicious, with a coronial report to follow.
Expressing deep sadness, Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick and GWS Giants CEO David Matthews conveyed their condolences to McCarthy’s family, friends, and teammates.
McCarthy, who kicked 99 goals in 70 AFL games, was highly regarded for his talent and positive presence both on and off the field.
Having experienced personal challenges during his career, including homesickness and a diagnosis of epilepsy in 2020, McCarthy was remembered as a kind-hearted individual by those who knew him.
The AFL community, led by CEO Andrew Dillon, mourns the loss of the young footballer and offers support through the AFL Players’ Association during this challenging time.
Tragically, McCarthy’s passing marks the third former Fremantle player to have died recently, following Shane Yarran in 2018 and Harley Balic in 2022.
As the AFL fraternity grieves this loss, organisations like Lifeline stand ready to offer crisis support to those in need.
