Former Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell Dies at 78
Former Connecticut Governor Mary Carolyn «Jodi» Rell has passed away at the age of 78, following a brief illness. Her family confirmed that she died at a hospital in Florida on Wednesday.
Rell, who served as the 87th governor of Connecticut, holds the distinction of being the state’s second female governor and the first Republican woman to hold the office. She was a pioneering figure in Connecticut politics, known for her contributions to the state’s governance during a critical transition period.
A native of Virginia, Rell moved to Connecticut in 1967 with her husband, the late Lou Rell, who was a commercial airline pilot. Her political career began with her election to the Connecticut General Assembly, where she served from 1985 to 1995.
In 1995, Rell assumed the role of lieutenant governor, a position she held until 2004. Her ascent to the governorship occurred under unexpected circumstances when then-Governor John Rowland resigned in the aftermath of a corruption scandal. Rell completed Rowland’s term and was subsequently elected to a full gubernatorial term in 2006. She remained in office until 2011, when she chose not to seek re-election.
Rell’s tenure as governor is remembered for her efforts to restore public trust in the state government following Rowland’s resignation. She was often praised for her focus on ethical governance and transparency.
The family has announced that details regarding funeral arrangements will be forthcoming in the days ahead.
