Dancing With The Stars Judges Panel

A former professional dancer and choreographer from the popular television show «Dancing With the Stars» (DWTS) has spoken out in defense of Judge Carrie Ann Inaba, following accusations of sexism and bias against female performers on the show. The dancer, Keo Motsepe, who first appeared on DWTS in its 19th season in 2014, shared his perspectives during an interview with People magazine.

Addressing the criticism, Motsepe explained, «Here’s the thing, if anyone comes on the show and they have dance experience, they’re going to come, and week one is just boom! Up there, right?» He further elaborated that judges inherently place such contestants at a high starting level, leading them to scrutinize every detail during performances. «The judges are subconsciously and automatically going to place you on that level, right? So they’re going to pick every single thing that you do wrong,» Motsepe stated.

The comments follow recent viewer discontent over Inaba’s scoring, particularly towards female contestants like reality star Lauren Kinney and women’s rugby player Ilona Maher. Inaba issued a score of 9 to Kinney, in contrast to perfect 10s awarded by fellow judges Derek Hough and Len Goodman. Similarly, Maher received an 8 from Inaba, prompting questions about fairness.

Inaba defended her position by highlighting that both Kinney and Maher selected some of the most challenging dances. «I was judging their performances based on a ‘higher criteria,'» she clarified.

Sharing Inaba’s viewpoint, Motsepe noted, «[The judges] are going to find things because they want you to keep that level that you came with because you can’t come so strong and then it goes away. They’re going to pinpoint every single thing then, but then you have other celebrities who come on the show with no dance experience and they just keep on improving and growing.» He added, «I don’t think it’s easy for the judges. You see what I’m saying?»

Besides defending the judges, Motsepe also addressed his absence from the series in recent years. He last appeared as a pro in Season 29 and was partnered with actress Anne Heche. «I think fans need to understand that as much as the pros have so much to do on the job with our partners, the producers have a lot of work, even more,» he explained. Motsepe praised the producers for managing extensive responsibilities, including dealing with the show’s crew and the professional dancers.

Motsepe concluded by expressing hope for a return to the series, saying he would «absolutely» come back if needed, acknowledging the demanding yet rewarding nature of the show.

«Dancing With the Stars» continues to air Season 33 episodes on Tuesdays at 8/7c, streaming live on Disney+.
