Former Formula 1 Driver Ralf Schumacher Comes Out as Gay
Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher, known for his successful career in the racing world, made a significant personal announcement on social media recently.
Schumacher, who had a notable stint in Formula 1 with teams like Jordan, Williams, and Toyota, shared his news on Instagram, officially coming out as gay. The younger brother of the legendary seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, Ralf posted a heartfelt image embracing another man, believed to be his boyfriend, with a touching caption expressing the joy of having the right partner by his side.
The 49-year-old German racer was previously married to Cora-Caroline Brinkmann, with whom he shares a son named David who was born in 2001. After their divorce in 2015, Schumacher transitioned into roles as a driver mentor and co-commentator for Sky Sports in Germany.
In the Instagram post, Schumacher’s partner, identified as Etienne, reciprocated the love shared in the public declaration. The couple was seen together at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix in May, with Etienne sporting a Monaco GP VIP Guest badge in one of their shared social media posts.
Notably, Schumacher’s announcement has garnered support from public figures like German reality TV star Carmen Geiss, who commended the racer’s courage in revealing his true self. Geiss emphasized the importance of Schumacher’s outing as a step towards embracing one’s identity without fear or shame.
With his disclosure, Ralf Schumacher joins a small cohort of male F1 drivers who have openly identified as gay. The late Mike Beuttler, who participated in several Grands Prix races in the early 1970s, was the first known gay F1 driver, paving the way for more inclusivity in the sport.
