Former DA Leader Nqaba Bhanga Joins ANC in Political Switch
Former Democratic Alliance Eastern Cape leader, Nqaba Bhanga, has officially crossed party lines to join the African National Congress (ANC) in a highly anticipated move. The announcement was made at the ANC’s regional headquarters in Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth, marking a significant political shift for Bhanga.
The decision comes after Bhanga’s expulsion from the DA in December 2023, triggered by controversial social media remarks aimed at federal council chairperson Helen Zille. Bhanga labeled Zille as ‘the most racist person’ in the strongly-worded post that led to his ousting from the party. The matter was further escalated to the DA’s Federal Legal Commission for investigation.
Bhanga expressed his commitment to rebuilding the ANC within the region, particularly focusing on Nelson Mandela Bay, where he previously served as mayor. During a media briefing following his induction into the ANC, Bhanga emphasized the need for concerted efforts to address the challenges facing the party and contribute to its renewal project. Drawing inspiration from former president Thabo Mbeki, Bhanga shared his vision of restoring the ANC’s integrity and effectiveness.
The ceremony welcoming Bhanga and two other former ANC members back to the party was attended by regional ANC leaders, who hailed their return as a strengthening of leadership within the Nelson Mandela Bay Region. In a statement, the ANC leadership extended warm greetings to the returning members, acknowledging their valuable leadership qualities and roles within the party.
