Former New York State Employee Charged with Acting as an Agent for China
BROOKLYN, NY – In a significant development, an indictment was unsealed today in federal court charging Linda Sun with acting on behalf of the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Sun, along with her husband Chris Hu, is accused of conspiring to launder the proceeds from their unlawful activities.

Linda Sun and Chris Hu were arrested this morning at their Long Island residence and are scheduled for arraignment later today before United States Magistrate Judge Peggy Kuo. The indictment highlights serious allegations of misconduct involving Sun, a former aide within the New York State government.

According to United States Attorney Breon Peace, Sun’s actions as a high-ranking official in the New York State government included serving as an undisclosed agent for the PRC while blocking access for Taiwanese officials to New York State officers. The indictment alleges that she changed official messaging regarding China and arranged meetings for PRC government delegations.

United States Attorney Peace stated, «As alleged, while appearing to serve the people of New York, the defendant and her husband actually worked to further the interests of the Chinese government and the CCP. The illicit scheme enriched the defendant’s family to the tune of millions of dollars.» This highlights the gravity of the allegations against Sun and Hu.

The indictment also details the financial misconduct, including Laurering of millions of dollars tied to their activities benefiting the Chinese government. In response to these allegations, the FBI expressed its commitment to protecting national security from foreign influence.

Sun’s previous roles in the New York State government included serving as deputy chief of staff and deputy commissioner for strategic business development at the New York State Department of Labor. Following the discovery of her misconduct, she was terminated from her employment in March 2023.
