Former Orlando Pirates Forward Justin Shonga Passes Away

Former Orlando Pirates forward Justin Shonga has tragically passed away, as confirmed by the Football Association of Zambia. The Zambian footballer, who has had a career spanning various clubs and countries, breathed his last on Sunday evening at a hospital in Zambia after a brief illness.

Shonga, known for his time at Orlando Pirates and subsequent moves to clubs in Africa and beyond, was most recently playing for Najran FC in Saudi Arabia on a short-term deal for the 2023/24 season.

The Football Association of Zambia officially announced Shonga’s untimely demise, with Zambia Police Deputy Spokesperson Dan Mwale providing details of his passing at Sikanze Military Hospital after a short illness.

During his time at Orlando Pirates, Shonga made a significant impact, playing 70 matches, scoring 16 goals, and providing 16 assists for the South African club. He was a key player under Serbian coach Milutin Sredojević, but eventually departed in search of new opportunities.

Following his tenure with Orlando Pirates, Shonga embarked on a journey that took him to clubs such as Tshakuma Tsha Madzivhandila, Cape Town City, Ismaily SC, Sekhukhune United, and FC Gagra, showcasing his versatility and skill on the field.

As an international player, Shonga made his mark with the Zambia national team, earning caps and scoring crucial goals. His contributions to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad solidified his place in Zambian football history.
