Las Vegas Grand Prix 2024

The 2024 Formula 1 season is rapidly nearing its conclusion, with three races left and a tight battle at the top. Max Verstappen, the Dutch driver, could potentially secure his fourth world championship title in the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix. As it stands, Verstappen leads the drivers’ championship with 62 points over his closest rival, Lando Norris of McLaren. However, Verstappen’s title hopes hinge on maintaining at least a 60-point lead when leaving Nevada.

The championship race’s landscape was affected by recent events at the Brazilian Grand Prix, where weather disruptions forced postponements. In contrast, the Las Vegas forecast predicts dry and warm conditions, which may provide a stable backdrop for this weekend’s pivotal race.

Lando Norris faces the challenge of closing the gap between himself and Verstappen. With eight wins this season, Verstappen has maintained dominance, whereas Norris has achieved three. Charles Leclerc sits in third place, 24 points behind Norris, with a total of three victories as well.

In terms of the constructors’ championship, McLaren holds a 36-point lead over Ferrari, with both teams having secured five wins each. Red Bull trails Ferrari by an additional 13 points, yet claims eight wins this season.

Verstappen expressed determination ahead of the Las Vegas race, while Lewis Hamilton, another notable F1 driver, reflected on a challenging race in Brazil. Meanwhile, George Russell highlighted ongoing concerns among F1 drivers, following an open letter addressing various issues in the sport.

Fred Vasseur’s leadership at Ferrari has been lauded following the team’s recent successes, winning two of the last three races. In contrast, the Las Vegas Grand Prix organizers have decided against replicating the formats seen in other U.S. races held in Austin and Miami.

The Las Vegas Grand Prix itself has a storied history, originally debuting in 1981 and running for two years under the Caesars Palace Grand Prix name. After a hiatus, the race returned to the F1 calendar in 2023, spearheaded by the sport’s owners, Liberty Media, in a bid to increase Formula 1’s presence in the United States.

The Las Vegas circuit includes key landmarks such as the city’s famous Strip, though the previous race was marked by an incident involving a loose drain cover disrupting the event. The circuit spans 50 laps, covering a total distance of 309 kilometers, with Oscar Piastri holding the lap record from 2023.

Last year, Max Verstappen triumphed in Las Vegas, overtaking the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc after being penalized during the race. Leading Ferrari in pole positions in the city, Leclerc was overtaken by Verstappen in the closing laps, demonstrating the Dutchman’s season-long excellence. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez completed the podium in third place.

As the Las Vegas Grand Prix approaches, McLaren’s Zak Brown has acknowledged Ferrari as a key competitor, having shown significant improvements over the last year. The race is set to be broadcasted on ESPNEWS in the U.S., with coverage available on Sky Sports F1 and BBC Radio 5 Live in the UK.
