During the summer break, Fox Chapel High School’s girls basketball team organized a successful summer league under the leadership of head coach Marty Matvey. The league, which ran on Tuesday nights in June, aimed to provide varsity players with valuable gameplay opportunities during the offseason.

Supported by the district, Coach Matvey expressed gratitude for the resources and facilities made available for the league. The high school gym, auxiliary gym, and middle school were utilized to accommodate the 12-team league, which included six junior varsity teams.

Teams from various schools, including Alle-Kiski Area schools, such as Burrell, Highlands, Kiski, and Valley, participated in the league alongside Fox Chapel. The event not only provided competitive games but also facilitated skill development and team bonding.

Assisting Coach Matvey in organizing the league was Fox Chapel’s assistant coach Kelly Gibson, who played a pivotal role in coordinating the logistics and scheduling of games. Local officials and evaluators were also present to oversee the games and provide valuable feedback to the teams.

Looking ahead, Coach Matvey anticipates a strong turnout for the upcoming varsity tryouts, with approximately 40 players vying for a spot on the team. The success of the summer league has fostered a sense of enthusiasm and commitment among the players as they look forward to the upcoming season.

As the summer progresses, the focus for the players shifts to individual development, with many engaging in AAU tournaments and other sports activities. Coach Matvey emphasizes the importance of a balanced offseason, encouraging players to explore different interests and take a break to recharge before the start of the new season.
