France Held to Goalless Draw by Canada in Euro 2024 Preparation Friendly
France and Canada played out a goalless draw in a friendly match as they concluded their preparations for the upcoming Euro 2024 and Copa America tournaments. The game, held at the Matmut Atlantique stadium in Bordeaux, saw both teams showcasing their abilities ahead of the major competitions.
In a closely contested first half, France created several scoring opportunities, with strikers Olivier Giroud and Kylian Mbappe coming close to breaking the deadlock. However, Canada’s goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau was in fine form, denying the French attackers with a series of impressive saves.
The second half continued in a similar fashion, with both sides pushing for a breakthrough goal. Canada’s Liam Millar struck the crossbar with an excellent curling effort, while Giroud, in his final home appearance, narrowly missed converting multiple chances for France.
Manager Didier Deschamps made tactical changes, introducing Mbappe in the 74th minute to inject more attacking threat. The Paris Saint-Germain forward almost found the net late in the game, but Crepeau once again stood firm to ensure the match ended level.
Giroud, France’s record goal-scorer, received a touching send-off from the fans at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux as he announced his retirement from international football after the upcoming European Championship.
Both teams will now turn their focus to their respective tournaments, with France considered one of the favorites for Euro 2024, while Canada, under new coach Jesse Marsch, prepares for the Copa America campaign.
