Frank Schmidt Faces Challenging Schedule with 1. FC Heidenheim
In an upcoming series of challenging matches, Frank Schmidt, the coach of Bundesliga club 1. FC Heidenheim, is preparing his team to face formidable opponents such as Bayer Leverkusen, Chelsea, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Bayern Munich. Schmidt has expressed a profound respect for Leverkusen’s coach Xabi Alonso, whom he regards highly after their previous encounters.
Speaking to the press, Schmidt emphasized, «I love these challenges.» Despite a tough schedule, he plans to approach each match with a focused mindset, saying, «I don’t see why we should already concern ourselves with all these teams at once. We play at Leverkusen next, and we know our remaining schedule by heart.» He aims to channel his team’s energy towards the Leverkusen match, aiming for a potential upset against the reigning German champions.
Addressing the fitness of his squad, Schmidt reported an overall positive status, with the exception of a player who is recovering from a persistent knee injury. The team will require «a clear plan» for the match, primarily focusing on defense. «We need to work hard on our defending, and sometimes, a bit of luck is necessary,» Schmidt pointed out, acknowledging the strengths of their opponents.
Currently, 1. FC Heidenheim is positioned 14th in the Bundesliga standings, with results in recent matches leaving room for improvement. Schmidt admitted to seeking more offensive effectiveness from his players, which has been lacking as compared to their adversaries. The team has enjoyed success in the UEFA Europa Conference League, winning three matches so far, but their Bundesliga campaign remains a struggle for survival.
Reflecting on the fluctuating fortunes, Schmidt noted, «We’ve been spoiled in recent years with consistent progress. But things don’t always remain the same. Now, the wind is blowing more from the front than from behind.» He expressed his fondness for tackling these challenges head-on, hoping to steer his team through the current difficulties.
