Gale Warning Hits Lake Michigan Shoreline with Strong Winds and High Waves
A Gale Warning was issued for the majority of the Lake Michigan shoreline on Thursday, bringing strong winds and high waves to the region. According to reports from Grand Haven, Michigan, the weather conditions caused significant disturbance along the coastline.
MLive multimedia specialist Joel Bissell took advantage of a break in the precipitation to launch a drone, capturing unique footage of the turbulent waters. Bissell’s first flight was at Pere Marquette beach in Muskegon, followed by a flight at Grand Haven State Park. During this time, surfers were observed taking on the large waves, undeterred by the hazardous conditions.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued the bulletin on November 21, which highlighted expectations of winds reaching up to 50 miles per hour. The advisory covered the area from St. Joseph to Manistee. Forecasters noted that waves were initially between 7 to 10 feet, with occasional crests reaching heights of 13 feet. These waves were expected to grow even further, building to heights of 12 to 16 feet.
The severe weather alert advised caution for all those residing in or traveling to affected areas along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Gale Warnings such as this are particularly concerning for maritime activities, potentially affecting boating and other water-related ventures in the region.
