Gary Oldman Critiques Royal Honors System
Gary Oldman, the renowned actor, has expressed his disappointment with the royal family’s failure to recognize his contributions to the film industry. In a recent interview, Oldman voiced his feelings about being overlooked by the honors system, stating, «I don’t know why. You should ask them. No nod from the royals, but there we are.» He went on to express hope that recognition may still come in the future.
During the discussion, Oldman also reflected on an opportunity he had to portray a Bond villain. He revealed, «I was asked quite a few years ago,» but confessed that he could not recall which film it involved. Despite this, he noted that the idea of playing the Bond villain did not resonate with him.
When asked about the future of the James Bond franchise, Oldman proposed a potential prequel. He suggested that his co-star from the series ‘Slow Horses,’ Jack Lowden, could take on the role of a young James Bond. Oldman commented, «I’d like to see a sort of prequel with him (Bond) in the Navy or something and becoming 007. Jack’s probably a little young at the minute, but he could be a young Bond coming up through the ranks.»
Oldman’s career has spanned several notable projects, including his work in the Harry Potter film series. He shared his honest assessment of his performances in the franchise, stating, «I think my work is mediocre in it.» He speculated that had he read the books as thoroughly as his late co-star Alan Rickman, he might have approached his role differently.
In a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival, Oldman reiterated his emphasis on self-criticism as an artist. He remarked, «If you’re not, and you’re satisfied with what you’re doing, that would be death to me.» His comments reflect a common sentiment among artists who strive for continuous improvement in their craft.
