Giants Turn to DeVito for Quarterback Role Amid Changing Dynamics
In East Rutherford, New Jersey, the New York Giants have reignited interest in quarterback Tommy DeVito, who is stepping into a starting role for the second time in his career. DeVito, whose unexpected rise as a successful starter last year turned him into a local sensation, is now focused on maintaining discipline and blocking out the noise this season.
«Last year was a good story and all, how it happened,» DeVito stated. «All the fun and games outside, it was fun. That was last year. I’m sticking to football now. Not that I wasn’t before.» DeVito emphasized that he’s keeping his focus tight, exclusively on Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders at MetLife Stadium.
The Giants’ decision to start DeVito comes after recent changes in their quarterback lineup. DeVito, previously the No. 3 quarterback, has been given a new opportunity as the team seeks to enhance on-field performance, following the benching of Daniel Jones.
Over the course of his initial tenure, DeVito earned the endearing nickname «Tommy Cutlets,» fueled by his Italian roots and his charismatic appeal. Fans embraced his brief stint of success, which included winning three consecutive games last season. Despite returning to a backup role in favor of other quarterbacks, DeVito remained a popular figure among the Giants’ fan base.
Now 26, DeVito is more experienced and independent, having moved out of his parents’ home. He’s actively avoiding social media distractions, focusing on improving his game. «I think my mom sends me a couple here and there, but I’m really kind of staying off social media and the outside stuff,» he noted.
As DeVito prepares for his second starting opportunity, Giants’ head coach Brian Daboll expressed confidence in what DeVito brings to the team. «He’s done a good job since he’s been here. We’ll work as hard as we can with him so he can be ready to go,» said Daboll.
At practice this week, DeVito took all first-team reps, indicating the team’s commitment to leveraging his skills in their upcoming match. Meanwhile, recent signing Drew Lock expressed his disappointment at being bypassed, despite being signed as the backup. «My disappointment will not show one bit around anyone in this facility,» said Lock.
Lock, who had aspired to the Giants’ No. 2 spot, had a frank meeting with Coach Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen, vowing to maintain professionalism and contribute positively to the team.
