Girona Aims for Third Consecutive La Liga Victory Against Espanyol
This weekend’s La Liga matchup sees Girona host Espanyol at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Saturday evening. Girona will attempt to secure their third consecutive league victory for the first time this season. They currently stand 10th in the league with 18 points from 13 matches, while Espanyol languishes in the relegation zone at 18th place, having collected just 10 points from 12 games.
Girona enjoyed a remarkable 2023-2024 season, finishing third in La Liga and earning a spot in the UEFA Champions League. Despite a challenging start to the current season, the Catalan side is only three points behind fifth-placed Osasuna. They come into this game on the back of victories against Leganes and Getafe, captured before the international break.
Espanyol, meanwhile, is struggling to find form, having lost three consecutive La Liga fixtures, including a recent 3-1 defeat in the Catalan derby against Barcelona. Point totals from three wins, one draw, and eight losses place them at the fringes of relegation.
The teams have had competitive encounters in recent times. Girona won their last meeting in April 2023 with a 2-1 scoreline, whereas Espanyol claimed victory the last time they visited Girona in the 2018-2019 season.
Girona is facing significant injury woes, with several key players sidelined, including Herrera. Possible starting lineup adjustments might see Gil, Van de Beek, and Gutierrez form the attacking midfield, supporting striker Miovski.
For Espanyol, absenteeism due to injuries also affects their squad. Key player Puado, who has netted four times this season, will likely lead their attack, seeking to exploit Girona’s shaky home form with 10 points from six matches.
