Green Bay Packers Strive to Elevate Christian Watson’s Game
GREEN BAY, Wis. – In a recent match against the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers‘ wide receiver Christian Watson made three receptions for a total of 37 yards, continuing a pattern of modest performance with previous games including four catches for 39 yards against Jacksonville and a single catch for 9 yards against Houston. In his first eight games this season, Watson reported less than 15 yards in four of those outings.
With these numbers in mind, Packers’ passing-game coordinator Jason Vrable initiated a conversation with Watson, aiming to strategize for better utilization of the talented third-year receiver. «I said to Christian, ‘Man, you’ve been getting open, and we’ve got to find a way to get you the ball,'» Vrable recounted as the team prepared for their upcoming game against the San Francisco 49ers. Vrable emphasized the importance of making the most out of Watson’s skills, acknowledging, «He’s genuine, he’s worked for where he got. And his words to me were, ‘I’ll get what I deserve.'»
Watson, showcasing maturity, reflected on his performance and future prospects. «You get what you put in,» he stated. Drawing from experience, Watson expressed confidence: «I know that in the long run, I’m going to get what I deserve out of this game in terms of what I’m going to put into it.»
In 2022, during his rookie season, Watson appeared as a promising receiver, particularly in the season’s final eight games, amassing eight touchdowns. However, the subsequent season was marred by injuries, reducing his stats to 28 receptions for 422 yards and five touchdowns over nine games in 2023. This season, Watson maintains a degree of progress, having garnered 20 catches for 383 yards and two touchdowns, only missing a game against the Rams due to an ankle injury.
Vrable remains optimistic about Watson’s contributions beyond the stat lines. «The majority of times, everybody bases it off of your stat line and your touchdowns,» Vrable observed, recognizing Watson’s impact on the Packers’ offensive strategies. «What did you do for the offense and our team to help us win? Did you block? Did you run good routes? I think that’s when you really start to build the confidence in yourself and be comfortable.»
A notable performance was recorded in a victory over Chicago, where Watson completed all four of his targets, achieving 150 yards. His impressive 60-yard reception in the fourth quarter was pivotal in securing the win. The team, including quarterback Jordan Love, has acknowledged the necessity to involve Watson more actively following their strategic by-week discussions.
According to Pro Football Focus, Watson ranks among the top receivers in several metrics, including third place for yards per catch with an average of 19.2, 16th in yards per route at 2.31, and third for contested-catch rate at 80% (8-of-10 attempts).
Despite the challenges posed by limited opportunities, Watson continues to demonstrate resolve and dedication through rigorous training and a positive outlook, factors he believes contribute significantly to his growing career. «I’ve been through much worse in my life than not getting the ball as much as I would hope,» Watson remarked, reflecting on his resilience and focus on the team’s achievements.
