Gregg Berhalter Relieved of Duty as U.S. Men’s National Team Coach
The U.S. Soccer Federation made a significant announcement today, revealing that Gregg Berhalter has been dismissed from his role as head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, effective immediately.
Cindy Parlow Cone, the President of U.S. Soccer, expressed gratitude towards Berhalter for his efforts and dedication to the organization and the USMNT, highlighting the need to find the right individual to lead the team to success in the future. She mentioned the involvement of Sporting Director Matt Crocker in this process.
Matt Crocker, the Sporting Director, has taken charge of the search for Berhalter’s successor. He acknowledged Berhalter’s contributions over the past five years and emphasized the importance of selecting a coach who can help the team reach its potential, especially with an eye on the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
Berhalter’s coaching record, which includes a 44-17-13 overall tally in 74 matches and a significant 29-9-7 record in official competitions during his tenure, showcased his impact. Notably, he led the team through a successful qualification campaign for the 2022 World Cup.
The 2022 World Cup saw the USMNT perform admirably under Berhalter’s guidance, securing a second-place finish in Group B with notable results against Wales, England, and Iran. Despite a valiant effort, the team bowed out in the Round of 16 against the Netherlands.
Under Berhalter’s leadership, the USMNT achieved success in winning the 2021 Gold Cup and clinching two Concacaf Nations League titles, further solidifying his legacy with the team.
