Hakeem Jeffries Speaks At The Democratic National Convention

On Wednesday, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries addressed reporters ahead of his evening speaking slot at the Democratic National Convention. He discussed the Democratic Party’s strategy for the upcoming November elections, emphasizing its forward-looking vision under Vice President Kamala Harris.

Jeffries, a key architect of the Democrats’ strategy to regain control of the House, outlined the party’s legislative agenda if they manage to secure the House, Senate, and presidency in November. He highlighted goals such as lowering costs, ending price gouging, and expanding the middle class.

He stated, “We’re going to continue to embark on articulating the Democratic vision while exposing House Republicans for being adherents to MAGA extremism and continuing to bend the knee to Donald Trump.” If the Democrats succeed in reclaiming the House, Jeffries would become the first Black House Speaker in U.S. history.

Jeffries expressed confidence that Democrats are prepared to address upcoming challenges while supporting Kamala Harris in her presidential bid. He remarked that Harris is “ready, willing, and able” to fight for the country and added that the DNC was an opportunity to celebrate Joe Biden, elevate Kamala Harris and Tim Walz, and confront MAGA extremism.

According to Jeffries, Harris’ leadership has invigorated the Democratic base and provided a clear contrast to the Republican Party’s approach. He stated, “Kamala Harris is leading us on a path forward, anchored in hope, joy, and unity.”

In praising Harris for her efforts, Jeffries noted her role in formulating the toughest bipartisan border policy, despite the political challenges posed by former President Donald Trump, who he criticized for attempting to politicize immigration issues.

He then commended Representative Tom Suozzi as a “phenomenal public servant,” acknowledging his contributions to the immigration debate among Democrats. Jeffries remarked that Democratic candidates across the nation are adopting the Suozzi approach of finding bipartisan solutions to problems.

In reflecting on the 2022 House race losses, Jeffries stated the importance of grassroots engagement and effective communication with voters, especially in battleground districts. He emphasized that Democrats must continue to promote their achievements in contrast to the Republican agenda.

Jeffries warned against complacency, stressing the need for Democrats to maintain strong turnout efforts in the upcoming election. “We have to continue to work each and every day,” he said, reiterating the tight nature of the electoral landscape.
