Hamilton Tiger-Cats Triumph Over Toronto Argonauts in Labour Day Showdown
HAMILTON — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats achieved an exhilarating 31-28 victory against the Toronto Argonauts on Monday, continuing Bo Levi Mitchell‘s undefeated record on Labour Day.
Mitchell demonstrated exceptional performance, throwing for 347 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Tiger-Cats to this crucial win after a four-game losing streak.
With this result, Mitchell improved his Labour Day record to 7-0, marking his first Labour Day start since 2019. «We all know Labour Day is a crazy game … it always brings out the best,» Mitchell expressed, acknowledging the significance of the occasion.
Hamilton’s ability to clinch the season series against Toronto allowed them to move within six points of the Argonauts in the East Division standings. Lirim Hajrullahu’s 42-yard field goal at 4:21 put Toronto ahead 28-27, while Marc Liegghio countered with a crucial 55-yard field goal later in the fourth quarter.
Despite a strong first half where Hamilton scored 27 points, the team experienced a lull in the second half, scoring only four points in the fourth quarter. However, the game showcased the resilience of the players, with Mitchell stating, «That just showed the resiliency, which is something I don’t think we’ve shown a lot this season.»
Tim White emerged as a standout player for the Tiger-Cats, recording six receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns. In addition, rookie Taulia Tagovailoa contributed with a touchdown and showcased potential as he made his debut.
The Argonauts’ offense consisted of two touchdowns from Chad Kelly and impressive performances from DaVaris Daniels and Ka'Deem Carey, with Kelly completing 24 of 30 passes for 322 yards.
Following this match, the Argonauts prepare for a challenging stretch that includes games against the Ottawa Redblacks and the B.C. Lions. The Tiger-Cats, in turn, will enjoy a bye week before facing the Redblacks at Tim Hortons Field on September 14.
