Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Forecast for the Northern Gulf Coast
WEAR-TV has forecasted a period of very heavy rain for the northern Gulf Coast on Tuesday as a significant weather system moves across the United States. Forecasters expect rainfall totals to range between three to five inches over Northwest Florida and Southwest Alabama. According to Chief Meteorologist Allen Strum, the rain is anticipated to start early Tuesday morning, with the heaviest precipitation likely to occur during the middle of the day.
The Storm Prediction Center has issued a level 1 out of 5 risk for severe storms in the area, suggesting the presence of stronger storms embedded within pockets of more intense rainfall. South winds are expected to increase, with gusts reaching 20 to 25 miles per hour. These strong winds are likely to contribute to high seas and surf conditions, leading to double red flags being displayed at beaches, closing the Gulf to swimming.
A notable cool-down is predicted to follow this frontal system, with high temperatures dropping into the lower 60s by Thursday and lows dipping into the 40s.
Despite the potential for some flooding, the National Weather Service has opted not to issue a Flash Flood Watch at this time. A statement released on Monday highlighted the recent dry spell, contributing to the decision. «Given uncertainties in the occurrence of the higher rainfall totals, we continue to hold off on a Flood Watch for now as our confidence remains low in widespread flooding. Regardless, we do expect to see some minor, nuisance flooding due to the excessive rainfall in our urban areas, especially if any heavier banding can set up in those locations,» the National Weather Service noted.
